The Up North Book Launch

Flyer

On Friday, November 1, 2013 my new book ‘Up North, Manitoba’s Last Frontier’ will be launched at McNally Robinson Booksellers, 1120 Grant Ave., Winnipeg, at 7:00 p.m. in the Atrium. It took 8 months to complete all aspects of this book. It is self published by the author, a graphic artist / layout designer, editor and several supporters who assisted in various functions.

The title ‘Up North’ is meant to represent the area of Manitoba starting at the southern tip of Lake Winnipeg, the 10th largest inland fresh water lake in the world, simply because of how people of this province regard anything north of the City of Winnipeg, located between the 49th and the 50th latitude, to be ‘Up North‘. This most common term is used by anyone traveling or living north of the 50th to describe where he or she is going or resides.

I have traveled up north my entire adult life, my children always having referred to my absence from home as being up north. Most people consistently describe anything north of Winnipeg, including southern towns and cities along the same parallel, as being ‘up north’. It is a term deeply rooted as part of our provincial and Canadian cultures.

If you have ever wondered what it is like to travel on winter roads and experience the solitude of whispering pine, thick lake ice, and some of the best sunsets in Canada, this book is for you to enjoy, share with loved ones, and realize the incredibly immense land mass Manitoba has carved out of this country.

The seasonal changes of forest and lakes, the panoramic vastness of the Boreal Forest and Canadian Precambrian Shield, scenes of remote communities, the splendor of northern winter vistas, and the quiet beauty of the night sky will dazzle you.

The “Up North” book is available starting mid October in all major bookstores and gift shops throughout Manitoba. As well there will be numerous exhibits displayed of fine art images from the book in selected communities in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
